Girls Groups

fostering empowerment
through caring community and accurate information

Think back to when you were your daughter's age. Remember the excitement, the curiosity, the confusion, and perhaps the shame and anxiety that so many of us experienced. What do you wish someone would have told you about sex, puberty, and romantic relationships?

Imagine what this time could have been like if you had a caring community of women whom you felt safe talking to and the space to ask your questions and receive accurate information.

In this five-session workshop, your daughter will explore topics such as sexual health, body image, healthy relationships, and consent. Groups are available for girls ages 10-17 years old, and consist of 5-8 young women of similar ages.

The fee is $250.00 USD per participant.

Group Sessions

Below you will find information on the five sessions of this workshop; however, we always customize the content based on the age of the participants as well as input from the parents and girls.

Session 1: Who Am I? Who Decides?
Girls are inundated with messages about how they are supposed to look, feel, and act. In this session, participants will investigate the messages they have received through media and society about what it means to be a “successful” woman. Girls will develop critical thinking and self-reflection skills, allowing them to discover their values and who they are beyond all of these messages.

Session 2: Let’s Talk about Love, Romance, and Healthy Relationships
The feelings that accompany your first romantic relationship are exciting and often overwhelming. Participants explore the nature of these feelings and the qualities that they would want in a healthy romantic relationship. Looking at real life scenarios, the girls discuss how their peers and the media influence expectations about love and romance. Together, we generate a list of questions to help them evaluate the health of a relationship.

Session 3: Learning about Your Changing Body
To navigate the teenage years with confidence, it is critical to be prepared for the physical changes that come with puberty. In this session, girls will learn about their own female anatomy as well as how and why their body is changing. We explore the topic of body image and discuss how to develop a healthy relationship with your changing body.

Session 4: What Is Sex and How Are Babies Made?
In this session, participants receive factual information about sex and reproduction. This session includes age-appropriate information on sexually transmitted infections and their prevention, as well as contraception. Girls learn that consent is required for all forms of physical touch within a relationship. Using scenarios, participants discuss how one would ask for, give, and refuse consent.

Session 5: Questions and Answers
To culminate our time together, this last hour is dedicated to questions from participants, as well as expanding on previous topics they would like to discuss further.

Optional
A one-hour group consultation with the parents to present the content covered and answer any questions. The fee for this additional hour is $100 USD per family (with a minimum of three families).
